There's More Ocean Than There Used to Be
Silicon Valley has a particular way of attacking hard problems. It's not about being smarter than everyone else. It's a methodology. Five moves, roughly:
1. Question the frame. Most "impossible" problems are impossible only inside the frame they're being asked in. Change the frame, and the impossible becomes a design challenge.
2. Look for the leverage point. Complex systems have pressure points where small inputs produce valuable outputs. Find them.
3. Prototype before you believe. Don't argue about whether something will work. Build a small version and watch what happens.
4. Scale what works. Once the prototype clears, the question shifts from "is this possible?" to "how fast can we build it?"
5. Keep the system honest. Measure the actual result, not the intended one. Adjust.
Now apply that to sea-level rise.
The frame for forty years has been: we're losing the coasts; how much can we save?
That frame produces two outputs: mitigation and retreat, but why not reframe it: there's more ocean than there used to be. Where should the excess go?
Suddenly the leverage point is visible. The world has enormous arid basins sitting below sea level or easily connected to the ocean. Redirect the excess water into engineered waterways and you can create freshwater systems, new coastlines, and habitable geography where there was none.
Singapore is looking at it with a $70 billion budget. NASA called it a game changer. The Netherlands, with 30 years of flood expertise said it's the first viable solution they've seen.
Methodology scales even to a planet.
